With great support from KFC Blouberg, the South African Kitesurfing Association(SAKA) was afforded the opportunity to host four events across the Cape Town windy season through the KFC Summer Kitesurf Series. Events covered various disciplines of the sport including:
- an Industry Demo day where brands displayed their 2019 products for attendees to test and compare to one another before making their decision on a purchase.
- a big air competition which is always a hit among competitors as amateur or professional can compete among one another for that one “lucky” jump where all the elements come together to get that perfect jump.
- a strapless wave riding contest, another discipline that carries a lot of publicity and entries.
- a freestyle event to showcase the technical aspect of the sport, we also added a old school division for the less serious to join in and have fun as well as for the first time on South African shores a strapless freestyle division where riders showcased abilities that are beyond the wildest imagination.
The events were open to all nationalities and we were thrilled to see a host of “first time” event competitors taking part from all over the world as well as a number of international professionals mixing it up with the local pros and weekend warriors. This year was a real coming together of enjoying the sport regardless of your skill level or preferred discipline.
Throughout the season kiters and kiteschool instructors registered to be affiliated with SAKA which among other benefits provided them with 3rd party liability as well as a portion of their contribution went towards the KFC Add Hope Foundation. Home of Hope is based in Tableview and is a beneficiary of the Add Hope initiative. Home of Hope was founded in August 2005 by Eleanor Brook, who inspired by her faith and having experienced life in a children’s home herself, wanted to harness her experience to provide support for other children in need of care. Home of Hope takes care of children in a single residence foster home, provides education to children with special needs and helps them to become productive and responsible members of the community. SAKA is thrilled to announce that through the combined contributions of the kiting community SAKA were able to raise R25 000 during the course of the season for the Home of Hope.
Although the season is far from over, the KFC Summer Kitesurf Series has come to an end but SAKA will keep everyone updated as to information on international news, up coming events and next seasons series through their website Facebook and Instagram accounts.
